ALIEN CAMPAIGN
The goal of this project was to design a believable fictitious vintage movie poster inspired by classic science fiction themes such as alien encounters, identity, and psychological suspense.
The poster needed to follow traditional poster design principles, including attracting attention quickly, communicating a clear message, and creating a memorable visual impact. The design had to mimic the style of vintage sci-fi posters while maintaining readability from a distance of approximately 8–12 feet.
Key design considerations included:
- creating an attention-grabbing visual
- using bold but harmonious color combinations
- keeping the composition clear and not overly cluttered
- selecting typography that complements the illustration style
- ensuring the layout looks convincing next to other movie posters
- incorporating a visual style inspired by older print techniques
- balancing decorative qualities with communication goals
The final deliverable required a vertical poster format (11 x 17 inches) designed at high resolution suitable for print display.
Instead of showing a traditional alien encounter scene, the design focuses on a single mysterious visual: an unfamiliar hand pressed against the inside of a spacecraft window. This image suggests that the anomaly was already present before the mission even began, creating suspense and encouraging the viewer to question what was kept secret.
The title reinforces the narrative by implying a cover up or classified discovery. The viewer is invited to imagine an untold story behind one of the most iconic moments in history.
The composition focuses on a single focal point: an unfamiliar hand pressed against a spacecraft window, suggesting a hidden anomaly connected to the Apollo mission. The simple layout helps communicate the idea quickly and keeps the design readable from a distance.
To create the final image, multiple visual assets were combined using photo compositing techniques. Two textured backgrounds were used to simulate aged paper and distressed print surfaces typical of vintage posters. The spacecraft window was created by editing a metallic reference image, while the alien hand was generated using AI and later refined through color adjustments, blending modes, and texture overlays.
Combining AI generated imagery with photographic assets allowed exploration of unusual forms while maintaining control of the final aesthetic. Warm aged tones, grain, and subtle imperfections were applied to recreate the look of printed posters from the late 1960s and reinforce the retro style.
Typography was selected to resemble technical lettering associated with mission documentation, supporting the narrative of a classified discovery.
The supporting mockups, including tickets, apparel, and billboard display, help demonstrate how the concept could exist as part of a promotional campaign.
This project strengthened my ability to use texture, typography, and composition to create mood and narrative while maintaining clarity and visual balance. It also provided valuable practice in recreating retro visual styles using modern digital tools.
